Nakhchivan City Court hears cases related to civil, criminal, administrative offenses and other cases within the territory of Nakhchivan City district as a court of first instance.

Establishment of Nakhchivan City Court

Nakhchivan City Court began to function in 1937 and its original name was Nakhchivan City People’s Court. Nakhchivan City Court hears civil cases, criminal cases, and cases of administrative offenses and other cases delegated to it by law as a court of first instance in accordance with article 20 of the Law, dated 10 June 1997, of the Republic of Azerbaijan “on Courts and Judges”. In addition, Nakhchivan City Court analyses judicial statistics, studies and consolidates the status of organization of court activity, as well as judicial practices and exercises other authorities as delegated to it by the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Activities of the Court

Nakhchivan City Court is planned to have a president and 3 judges. The jurisdiction of the court applies to the territory of Nakhchivan City. At present, the territory of Nakhchivan City is 191,57 sq km, and it has a population of 85.587 (01.07.2011). There are 5.051 refugees and 970 internally displaced persons settled in the territory of Nakhchivan City. Nakhchivan City – the capital of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is one of the oldest cities of Azerbaijan. It is located 1000 meters above sea level. Nakhchivan, one of the oldest cities of the East, was destroyed numerous times through the centuries but re-built again. Nakhchivan was the capital of Eldenizler state in the 12th and 13th centuries. Beginning in mid 19th century prior to Azerbaijan’s inclusion into Russia Nakhchivan city was the capital of Nakhchivan khanate. In February 1924, it became the capital of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
