The information about Sabail district

Sabail district is a central district of Baku city which is located along the Caspian Sea, and shares administrative borders with Nasimi, Yasamal and Garadagh districts of the capital. Its area is 29 sq km, and it has a population of 89.238 and 8.804 internally displaced persons.
While Sabail district is an ancient dwelling of Baku city, it was formed as an administrative territorial unit since 20s of the last century. The district previously carried names such as "Bayil Bibi-Heybat", "Stalin" from 1931, "26 Baku Komissarlari" from 1960 and Sabail district since 29 April 1992 based on the decision No 112 of the National Council of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Sabail is the name of a historical monument located 350 meter south-west of the coast of Baku bay.

There are monuments dating back to the ancient age and medieval centuries in the territory of the district. Icherisheher [Old City] is the most magnificent of the historical monuments existing in Azerbaijan and included in the world cultural heritage items by UNESCO. Icherisheher is over 1000 years old. Shirvanshah palace complex which is another astonishing state historical architectural museum-preserve is its masterpiece. The key government bodies of the Republic of Azerbaijan including – President’s Administration, Milli Majlis, Cabinet of Ministers, Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies, Constitutional Court, Baku City Executive Power, Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Government House which houses a number of ministries and other agencies, are located in the territory of Sabail district. "Sahidlar Khiyabani" [Martyrs Avenue] and "Fakhri Khiyaban" [Honorary Avenue], Heydar Aliyev Foundation, as well as many recreational and leasure centers, including Fountains Square, Coastal Boulevard and Freedom Square which are the main places in Baku to be visit for Baku’s population and its guests are located in Sabail district.
