As one of the initial results of court-law reforms conducted under the direction of national leader of Azerbaijan people Heydar Aliyev, the three stage judicial system – courts of first instance, appeal instance and cassation instance have been established in our republic and this system passed a new stage by the decree signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on January 19, 2006 in respect to application of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on “modernization of judicial system of the Republic of Azerbaijan” and on “making amendments and supplements to some legislation acts of the Republic of Azerbaijan”.
Baku Court of Appeal formed on July 16 in 2007 is a high judicial body on civil cases, on criminal cases and cases on administrative infringements, on cases on economic disputes and on cases of military courts.Baku Court of Appeal consist of Presidium, Collegium on criminal cases and cases on administrative infringements, Collegium on civil cases, Collegium on cases on economic disputes, Collegium on cases of military courts. The Collegia of Baku Court of Appeal hears the appeals and appeal protests arising from the decisions of the courts of first instance on territorial jurisdiction as a appeal instance.
